Triathlon 101

OVERVIEW

Focused on the novice triathlete, Triathlon 101 is designed to prepare you for your first triathlon.  The typical participant will be new to the sport, though the program is appropriate for those who may have “completed” a triathlon in the past and are looking for guidance on how to improve the experience – while focused on the novice, Triathlon 101 is open to all abilities and the coaching staff will be able to provide more advanced training options upon request.  More experienced triathletes seeking a group support network and training partners are also encouraged to participate.tri-1.jpg

The 8-week Triathlon 101 program if offered in partnership with Triathlon training group Team Z.  It includes a mix of morning, evening, and weekend training and educational sessions.  The program helps you gradually increase your running, biking, and swimming volume, while introducing you to proper technique and the other fundamental components of Triathlon in a coach-led, supportive, and social setting.

DETAILS

The program is offered in multiple locations around the DC area, focused in Reston, DC, and Arlington.  Each session includes access to weekly group runs, swim sessions, and rides at regular times. In addition, participants have access to weekend/evening clinics offered on topics ranging from equipment selection; to cycling etiquette, safety, and technique; to triathlon rules; and more.  Participants are encouraged to attend at least one session weekly to keep yourself motivated and plugged in with your coach and group -- we understand that work, travel, and family commitments may mean you cannot always attend all sessions, but the more you attend, the more benefit you get! Participants also receive guidance on what to do on their own for days the group does not meet and suggested training schedules to prepare them for their race goal.

tri-2.jpgIn 2011, the program cost for Triathlon 101 is $179 for an 8-week session.  This cost includes access to over 32 weekday coached group sessions (we understand you may not be able to attend them all, but encourage all participants to commit to attending at least one session/week on average.  Note that swim sessions do also require a $6/session pool access fee charged by the pool facilities – but reserved swim lanes and coaching are included in your program fee.)  The program cost also includes free access to the many educational clinics, weekend supported rides, and a great social network.

New participants also receive a Participant Pack including a water bottle, custom Sugoi triathlon jersey ($75 value!), and other giveaways.  Active participants in Triathlon 101 also receive a 10% discount on all purchases at Potomac River Running Store.

UPCOMING SESSION AND REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Summer Triathlon 101 Sessions will be offered in Arlington, and Cleveland Park/DC, and Reston beginning the week of 8/22.

Each program will begin with a formal kickoff meeting (dates specified below), after which participants are invited to participate in any/all weekday training sessions for the subsequent eight-weeks, as well as weekday and weekend clinics. Coaches will also offer additional training opportunities on both weekdays and weekends – sites and times for weekend training and clinics will vary.  There are several kickoff opportunities and you can attend ANY kickoff -- they kickoffs get your training jump started with a LOT of useful information on triathlon.  (Note that for TRAINING, you can attend any kickoff and can attend the sessions at any site, but you should choose a primary location when you register.)

Note:  Many participants will culminate their training with the Waterman Sprint Triathlon -- a "local" race only about 45 minutes from Arlington.  Register now if you want to be sure you get in to the race!

Nora came to the first Running 101/201 training program in Cleveland Park convinced that she was a beginner runner who really didn't like to run. After just two sessions, Coach Taneen Carvell challenged her a bit as she was easily keeping to the heels of the faster runners despite believing in her "beginner" status. By leading the other new runners and having stronger runners to 'chase', Nora quickly found her groove and her runner smile. And proved her ability to rise to the challenge, tackling her first 10K within six weeks of the class training. But most of all, she learned to love running. And the fun of being challenged and cheered equally across the miles.
